Dr. Hickman enjoys the practice of general and pediatric orthopaedics, as well as, knee and hip replacement surgery. He provides comprehensive musculoskeletal care. He has been practicing in Indian River County for over 22 years. Dr. Hickman graduated Magna Cum Laude at the University of Miami and was ranked top in his medical school class at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Hickman completed his internship and residency at Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Personal Biography

Dr. Hickman enjoys the outdoors and has special interest in all types of fishing. He also began his career caring for patients in Vero Beach and has been doing so since 1986.

Seth Coren, M.D.

Professional Biography

Dr. Seth Coren received his medical degree from the State University of New York in 1973. He completed his general surgical internship and orthopaedic residency at the University of Miami in 1978. He is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Coren has completed basic and advanced courses in articular cartilage injuries. Dr. Coren is also a member of the Genzyme National Speakers Bureau. He also has a long-standing and continued interest in Arthroscopic Surgery in the upper and lower extremity joints as well as Hand Surgery. While at the University of Miami, he trained under Dr. William Burkhalter, one of the leading orthopaedic hand surgeons in the country. Dr. Coren has been practicing Orthopaedics and serving the people of Indian River County since 1979.

Personal Biography

Dr. Coren has been a resident of Vero Beach since 1979 and has raised two children in Indian River County. He has been an active member of Temple Beth Shalom where he has been a past president and board member. His son received his Master's Degree at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. His daughter is a graduate of Pace Law School. Dr. Coren has been actively involved in sports and athletics since participating in varsity soccer at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. He is an avid bicycle rider, having recently completed the Muscular Dystrophy Tampa to Orlando ride.

George K. Nichols, M.D.

Professional Biography

Dr. Nichols specializes in total joint replacement of the hip, knee and shoulder. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland, completed surgery and orthopaedic surgery residencies at Yale-New Haven Hospital and served as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine.

Dr. Nichols is a past Section Chief of the Department of Orthopaedics at Indian River Medical Center. Since being at IRMC he has done over 5,000 total hip replacements and 5,000 total knee replacements. He has, over the past 15 years, been a consultant surgeon for one of the world's largest implant companies.

Personal Biography

Dr. Nichols is very proud of his family. He has a son with a PhD in Counseling Psychology and his daughter-in-law is finishing her PhD in Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins. His daughter graduated from Cornell University and is seeking her Masters in Fine Art. In his free time, Dr. Nichols enjoys the outdoors. He is a former collegiate tennis player and former top 10 ranked player in the state of Florida. He has completed a marathon in all 50 of the United States and is finishing completing a marathon on every continent. He has also completed seven Ironman competitions, including one on every continent except Antarctica. Dr. Nichols has spent his entire professional career caring for patients of Indian River County and surrounding counties.

John P. Peden, M.D.

Professional Biography

Dr. Peden specializes in arthroscopic surgery and in the treatment of conditions involving the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. He received his medical degree from the University of Florida. He completed an internship in general surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center and his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic. He went on to complete a dual fellowship in arthroscopy and sports medicine at Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Jackson, Mississippi, where he was the team physician for Mississippi Valley State University. Prior to medical school, Dr. Peden taught English in Japan for over two years, and continues to support education endeavors in the field of medicine. Dr. Peden is actively involved as an Associate Master Instructor for the Arthroscopy Association, teaching advanced arthroscopic techniques to training orthopaedic residents and practicing surgeons at their prestigious Orthopaedic Learning Center in Chicago. He has co-published chapters in three text books on the arthroscopic treatment of the elbow. Here in Florida, Dr. Peden serves as an assistant clinical professor for the Florida State University College of Medicine. He has brought several arthroscopic and endoscopic techniques to Indian River County not previously available, including femoroplasty for impingement of the hip, coracoclavicular ligament reconstruction for the shoulder, endoscopic decompression for entrapment of the suprascapular nerve, and arthroscopic radial head excision for rheumatoid arthritis of the elbow.Dr. Peden is a member of both the Arthroscopic Association of North America and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He is an instructor of arthroscopic surgery on a national level and has published in peer-reviewed journals and books.

He is an avid blues musician and enjoys windsurfing and sailing.

Matthew D. Hepler, M.D.

Professional Biography

Dr. Hepler specializes in comprehensive spine care. He is a graduate of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Johns Hopkins University. His post graduate training includes Flight Surgeon at Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, internship in general surgery at Presbyterian Hospital New York, residency at New York Orthopaedic Hospital, and a spine fellowship at Twin Cities Spine and Scoliosis Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Hepler practiced orthopaedic and spine surgery for six years at Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he also held a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He was also on staff at the Children's Memorial Hospital where he specialized in Scoliosis. He remains a member of the Scoliosis Research Society and has been published extensively in peer reviewed journals and books.

Dr. Hepler is a recipient of the NIH Institute Research Service Award and the Armed Forces Health Profession Scholarship. His honors include Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Society and All American Swimming. He was a designated Surface Warfare Medical Officer receiving the Navy Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, South West Asian Service Medal and Navy Unit Commendation. He is also an instrument and commercial pilot with an Instrument Rating.

Dr. Hepler's memberships include: American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Medical Association, Aerospace Medical Association, and the North American Spine Society.

Dr. Hepler joined the staff at Vero Orthopaedics and Vero Neurology in July 2007 where he began seeing patients and is focused on developing a Comprehensive Spine Care Center of Excellence with our team of Orthopaedic surgeons, Rehab Physical Medicine Physicians and Neurologists. He is also on staff at Indian River Medical Center and Healthsouth Treasure Coast Rehabilitation Hospital.

Dr. Hepler is an accomplished swimmer and enjoys sailing. He has family in South Florida and is looking forward to spending much of his free time enjoying our coastal waters.

Allison Wade, M.D.

Professional Biography

Dr. Wade specializes in the treatment and reconstruction of foot and ankle injuries and disorders. She recently completed her foot and ankle fellowship training at the nationally accredited program with Penn State Bone and Joint Institute in Hershey, Pennsylvania. She completed general orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Missouri. She received her medical school degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis. Dr. Wade is an active member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. She has research interests in tendon disorders and fracture care. She has presented research at national meetings and has published in peer-reviewed journals.
